What are the 3 functions of an ethics committee function?
- education
- policy and procedure review
- case consultation
Who needs to be educated?
committee self education for the hospital and medical staff
What is involved in the policy and procedure review
end of life care withdrawal of care resuscitation status informed consent palliative care
Why is a case consultation needed?
- ethical vagueness and confusion may be present
- situations involving disagreement between care provider and other involved parties
- situations that involve withholding or withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment
What are the 4 Core Bioethics principles?
- Autonomy
- Beneficence
- Non maleficence
- Justice
What is Autonomy
patient has right to refuse or to choose their treatment
*if patient doesn’t have capacity to making end of life decisions (dementia, brain injury, delirium) their choices are made according to “best interest”
What is Beneficence
- acting in the best interest of the patients
- a care plan should be established to most benefit patient
What is Non-Maleficence?
“First Do No Harm”: “Primum Non Nocere”
- Clinicians should not harm any patient
What is Justice?
decision of who gets what treatment (fairness and equality)
medical benefits should be dispensed fairly
What are the 3 end of life decision making options?
- Allow Natural Death (AND)
- Replaces No Code Blue (NCB)
- Do Not Resuscitate Order (DNR)
* *All mean same thing but AND is a more publically accepting term
Who can consult the ethics committee?
Physicians, Nurses, Patients, Patient’s Family members, hospital administrators
What are the possible outcomes that come from ethics committee consult?
- not decision making
- clarification of ethical issues
- recommendations on patient care
- support for all parties
