What is parental permission?
People can only consent for themselves
Parents give permission for child to have medical treatment
What is assent?
- Appropriate explanation of procedures with risks, benefits, and alterations
- important for research setting
- if a child doesn’t have a choice then they should be informed about what is going to happen
What is an emancipated minor?
pregnant, or a parent, who lives independently and supports themself
What is a mature minor?
Awarded by a judge to give an adolescent decision-making capabilities for a specific reason (transplant)
- if they can demonstrate that they understand the risks, benefits and consequences of their decision
Who are minors that can consent to any medical treatment?
- Minors who are or have ever been married and/or are parents
- Minors who are members of armed forces
- Minors who are homeless, under 16 years of age, and living without physical or financial support of parent or guardian
What concept is pediatrics based off of?
best interest standard or beneficence
Definition of futility
quality of producing no valuable effect
What does DCFS stand for?
Department of Children and Family Services
When is DCFS called?
Parents are presumed to make decisions in their children’s best interest, although when parents withholding life saving therapy
Example of when DCFS is called
ex. when parent doesn’t want chemotherapy done to child and physician says it could benefit child
What are some examples of informed consent?
Permission to touch
Sound mind and body
Capacity to make decision
