Bioenenergetics Flashcards
Job of the palisade mesophyll?
Absorbs light for photosynthesis
Job of the lower epidermis?
Allows gases to diffuse
Job of the spongy mesophyll?
Increases surface area for gases to be exchanged
What does xylem transport?
Water
What do phloem transport?
Sugar
What is transpiration caused by?
Evaporation and diffusion if water from a plants leaf
What type of reaction is aerobic?
Exothermic
What is the equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose+oxygen—>water+carbon dioxide
What is aerobic respiration controlled by?
Enzymes —> requires oxygen
What is respirtation?
Process of transferring energy from the breakdown of glucose
What is the equation for anerobic respiration in muscle cells?
Glucose—>lactic acid
What is the equation for anerobic respiration in yeast cells?
Glucose—>ethanol+carbon dioxide
Explain what happens when you exercise?
You Produce lactic acid, then you anaerobically respires, increasing heart rate. to get more O2 to cells, O2 breaks down, lactic acid, or goes to the liver to be broken down.
What is oxygen debt?
Amount of oxygen needed to react with lactic acid formed
Where does photosynthesis take place?
Chloroplasts
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
Water+carbon dioxide—>glucose+oxygen
Why do plants respire?
For respiration and growth
