Biodiversity and Classification Flashcards
Biodiversity
The variety of living organisms in a certain region
Genetic Diversity
The genes that every individual gets from their parents and passes on to offspring
Ecosystem Diversity
The number of different ecosystems in an area
A Keystone Species
A species that plays a large role in they way an ecosystem works
eg. Protea
Indigenous
A species that occurs naturally in a certain area
Endemic
Indigenous species found only in one area and nowhere else in the world
endemic is endiginous
Biodiversity Hotspots
Areas in the world that are rich in biodiversity but are unique and threatened
3 Examples of biodiversity Hotspots in South Africa
Cape floristic region
Succulent karoo
Maputa- Pondoland- Albany
Classification
The sorting or grouping of organisms
(taxonomy)
5 Kingdom system
monera
protists
fungi
plants
animals
Why use a dinomial system
To avoid confusion, Linnaeus suggested the binomial system.
First name is the genus and the second is the species
Prokaryotes
before nucleus
no clear nucleus= no organelles
Eukaryotes
formed nucleus
cells have nucleus enclosed within a nuclear membrane
