Biodiversity 2.1 Flashcards
What are heritable characteristics?
Heritable characteristics are things that are passed down from generation to generation.
What are non-heritable characteristics?
Non-heritable characteristics are things that are an acquired trait.
What are the two types variation?
One of the types of variation is discrete variation, either/or variation (if earlobes are attached or not).
The other type of variation is continuous variation - a variation that has range (weight).
What is the variation in environments?
Some variations in individual organisms result from interactions with the environment. Ex: You have two plants that are completely identical. You put one plant in a sunny window and the other in a dim closet, they would soon begin to look very different. The one in the sunlight would be green and full, but the other one would not look very lively.
Variations caused by interactions within the environment are not heritable.
Ex: If a child of tall parents doesn’t receive proper nutrition, he or she probably will not be as tall as their parents.
