Biodiversity. Flashcards
What are three ways to measure biodiversity?
- Genetic diversity
- Species diversity
- Ecosystem diversity
What is biodiversity?
The variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem.
What is genetic diversity?
The total genetic info contained w/in all individuals of a species.
What is species diversity?
of species and relative abundance w/in a region.
What is ecosystem diversity?
Biotic communities and abiotic factors that influence the biota.
What is biotic and abiotic?
Biotic- living or once living components of a community.
Abiotic- temp and weather ( physical features) in a community.
Shannon-Weiner
Used to determine species diversity
What are the effects of biodiversity?
Habitat loss Pollination Introduction to new species Over exploitation Edge effect Habitat fragmentation Area effect
What is edge effect?
Disturbances around edge of land ( disecrection, temp, and animals)
What is habitat fragmentation?
Braking of land into smaller areas caused by landslides and species invasion.
What is the area effect?
Bigger the area the more species there are.
