Biodiversity Flashcards
Biology
Biology is the study of living things in all their detail
Biodiversity
Describes the great variety of life that exists in our biosphere on 3 Levels.
Three levels of Biodiversity
Level of Species, Level of Ecosystems, Level of Genes
Diversity of Species
The range of all the different species (organisms capable of interbreeding and producing viable offspring in nature)
Diversity of Ecosystems
The range of different ecosystems (made up of interactions between the biotic and abiotic components)
Diversity of Genetics
All the genes in a species which code for different characteristics/traits
Biological Species Concept
A group of organisms that share a gene pool; all members of the same species have the capacity to interbreed to produce fertile offspring as long as they are not prevented by any physical barrier.
Morphological Species Concept
Characterizes a species by its form (morphology).
Phylogenetic Species Concept
Identifies a species as being the smallest group of organisms who can trace all their origins to a single common ancestor.
Spatial Patterns
Random (irregular like cacti in the desert)
Clumped (individuals are in different sized groups and groups are spaces out in a non-uniform manner like meerkats
Uniform (spaced evenly like trees in a forest competing for sunlight)
