Biodiversity Flashcards
Biodiversity
The number of species and the number of individuals in each species in a given environment
Species richness
Number of species in an area
Species eveness
The number of organisms within each species
Simpson’s Diversity Index
A measure of diversity that considers richness and eveness,
Value between 0 and 1,
The greater the value, the greater the biodiversity
Polymorphism
The presence of different phenotypes amongst members of a single species
How do you calculate biodiversity within a species?
No. of polymorphic gene loci/ total No. of loci
= proportion of polymorphic gene loci
Adaptation definition and types
A feature of an organism that increases its chance of survival in its environment:
- Anatomical, changes to physical features
- Physiological, changes to its bodily processes
- Behavioural, changes to actions
