Biodiversity Flashcards
What is variation?
Differences that exists between individuals
What causes variation?
Genetic factors
Differences in the environment
Name 2 things you need to do when investigating varitaion
Make sure your investigation is random and studied statistically so a mean can be found
Define biodiversity
The variety of living organisms in an area
Define habitat
A place where organisms live
Define community
All of the populations of different species in a habitat
What is local biodiversity?
The variety of different species living in small habitats that is local to you
What is global biodiversity?
The variety of species on earth
What is species richness?
A measure of the number of different species in a community
How is species richness worked out?
By taking random samples of a community and counting the number of different species
What is the equation for the index of diversity?
N (N - 1) / n (n - 1)
N = total number of all species
n = total number of organisms in one species
If all individuals in an area are the same species what is the index of diversity?
1
What does it mean if the index of diversity is high?
The more diverse an area is
