Biodiversity Flashcards
Define Biodiversity
Number of species and the number of individuals within any one community
Define Species Richness
The number of different species within a community
Define what is meant by a community
All the individuals of all the species living together in the same area at the same time
What is meant by genetic diversity
The difference in DNA/alleles/Genes
Describe what a Niche is
An organisms role in their ecosystem/community
It describes what the species is like, where it occurs, how it interacts with other species and responds to the environment
Define what is meant by a habitat
Place where an organism lives within an ecosystem
What is needed to calculate a diversity index
Number of different species
The number of individuals in each species
Why is diversity index more useful as a measure of biodiversity as opposed to just the number of species
Measures proportions of species and some species may be present in low/high nimbers
Give 2 advantages of using an index of biodiversity rather than an indicator species
You do not need to identify each species
Index considers the number of organisms of each of the species
How does farming reduce species diversity
1.Natural plants and animals are lost through ploughhing which reduces variety of food sources habitats and niches
2.Growth of specific crops or animals occurs and growth of other species are controlled
3.Pesticides and herbicides may be used to kill unwanted species which reduces diversity
Define species
A group of similar organisms/organisms with the same genes which can reproduce to produce fertile offspring
What is taxonomy
The theory and practice of classification
What is the binomial naming system
A universal 2 word scientific name given to species with the first word being the Genus name and the second being the Species name
What are the 8 leves of organisms taxonomy
Domain
Kindgon
Phylum
Class
Order
Family
Genus
Species
What are the three classifications of Domain
Bacteria
Archaea (prokaryotes)
Eukarya
