Biodiversity Flashcards
Biodiversity
The variety of plant and animal life in the world or in a particular habitat.
Species Richness
The number of species within a defined region.
Species Evenness (relative species abundance)
A description of the distribution of abundance across the species in a community.
Percentage Cover
Indicator for species of different sizes or species that are difficult to count
% of squares an organism appears in.
Percentage Frequency
Indicator for distribution (Evenness for species distribution)
% of quadrats that an organism appears in.
Simpson’s Diversity Index + Formula
Combines evenness, richness, and distribution to find diversity
Closer to 1= Very diverse
Formula=1-( Ʃ n(n-1))/(N(N-1))
Spatial Differentiation
The distance between habitat patches relative to the dispersal distance of the organism.
Temporal Differentiation
Is a habitat lifespan relative to the generation time of the organism. In thbe case of climate change measuring the change in temperature in degrees per year or even degree per decade.
Predation
A biological interaction where one organism the predator, kills and eats another organism, its prey.
Competition
is an interaction between organisms or species in which both require a resource that is in limited supply.
Symbiosis
Symbiotic relationships are the modification of the physiological interactions between partners that influence their ecological dynamics and evolutionary processes.
Disease
A condition of the living animal or plant body or of one of its parts that impairs normal functioning and is typically manifested by distinguished signs and symptoms. e.g rare genectic diseases, sickness or infection.
