BIODIVERSITY Flashcards
What is biodiversity?
Referring to the variety of life on earth, it is used to meassure the health of biological systems.
What are the biochemicals that all living organisms contain?
carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, protein.
What is genetic diversity?
it is a diversity of genes in a species.
What is species diversity?
it is a but of diversity among species in an ecosytem.
What is eco system diversity?
it is the variety of ecosystems in the biosphere.
What methods are used to meassure biodiversity?
Gene diversity, heterozygosity, alleles per locus.
What is heterozygosity?
number of individuals for the mean number of individuals with 2 differetn alleles for a particular gene.
What are the 2 categories of biological classification?
artificial, and natural.
what are the key terms of taxonomy?
Nomenclature, systematics, species.
What does nomenclature mean?
The scienctific naming of organisms using the binomial system.
What does systematics mean?
The pairing of organisms into groups based on similarities and differences.
What does species mean?
A group of individuals of common ancestry that closely resembple each other and are normally capable of interbreeding to produce fertile offspring.
What are the seven main taxa?
- kingdom
- phylum
- class
- order
- family
- genus
- species
What are the five main kingdom classifications?
- plants
- aniamls
- prokaryotes
- protoctists
- fungi
What is rhe proper way to write the biological name of an organism?
write the genus first and then the species second and it must be underlined or in italics thw first ketter bing a capital.
