biodiveristy Flashcards
what does biodiversity give an indication of?
both the Range of species and alos how evenely balanced the numbers of indicdulas are across difrrent species
what is simpsons index?
meaure of biodiversity tht takes into account both the number of species and the number of individuals of eavh species
when do we use density and when do we use %cover
d= anmials and %= plants
what does simpsons index measure and what doesn’t it measure
it measures species diversity ut doesn’t measure ecosystem diversity eand genstic diversity
what is ecodiversity?
represents the diversity of ecosystems within the biosphere
what is a habiata?
refers to the place an organism lies
what is an environment?
describes the conditons that affect organisms in a habitata
what can the environment be split into?
abiotic and biotic
what are ecosystems?
a community of organicms, interacting with one another and the associated envrinment
what si the population?
it is madde up of all the members od the same species that occur in a particular area at a particular time
what is a communtiy
a group of speices which occur in the same place at eh same time
what is genetic diversity?
this refers to the genetic variblitiy of the species
where is genetic varibilty greater? (variation of dna and genes)
in species that have become adapted to a wide range of environment. (species want to be this)
what species will be more genetically varible
subject to higher rates of dna mutation
What is the generic name
Indicates the genus to which the species belongs
What is the specific or species name
Identifies the species to which an organisms belongs
Why are tigers and lions classified as diffrent species
Hybrids tend to not occur in natural conditions
Good for phylogenetic taxonmynover binomial
The different species in a genius do you not just have a large number of similarities, they also share a common ancestry i.e. they have evolved from a common ancestor
How will diffrent species be more related
Grips of species that have shared a common ancestor more recently than other species will consequently be more closely related
Why is cell structure important and
Cell structure differences are important in classifying organisms as plants fungi or animals
How can length of time of separation from ancestors be evaluated
Analysing similarities in DNA, RNA or protein, using the degree of change at gene or a biochemical level as a type of molecular clock.
(This is because once two or more species evolved from an ancestral species, certain mutations will spontaneously take place in the DNA of one of the species but not necessarily in the others. Or tiny species will increasingly differ in their DNA.
