Biochemistry Vocabulary Flashcards
Isotope
Atoms of an element that contain different numbers of neutrons
Element
One of a class of substances that can’t be separated into simpler substances by chemical mean
Ionic bond
The electrostatic bond between two ions formed through the transfer if one or more electrons.
Covalent bond
A chemical bond that involves the sharing of electron pairs between atoms.
Compound
A substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds
Hydrogen bond
A hydrogen atom that has a covalent link with one of the electromagnetic atoms forms and electrostatic oink
Cohesion
The molecular force between particles with in a body or substance that acts to unite them.
Adhesion
The forced of attraction between unlike molecules or the attraction between the surfaces or contacting bodies.
Polarity
The property or characteristic that pouches unequal physical effects at different points in a body or system.
Solute
The substance dissolved in a given solution.
Solvent
Having the power if dissolving; causing solution.
Hydrophobic
Having little or no affinity for water.
Hydrophilic
Having a strong affinity for water.
Chemical reaction
A process that involves rearrangement of the molecular or ionic structure of a substance.
Activation energy
The minimum quantity of energy that the reacting species must possess in order to undergo a specific reaction.
