Biochemistry Review Flashcards
What are the differences between physical and chemical properties
Physical properties are characteristics and chemical properties are behaviors
What is the universe made of
Matter and energy
What are the four signs of a chemical change
Color change, temperature change, gas forms (bubbles), precipitate/solid forms
What are the building blocks of matter
Atoms
What are the three subatomic particle’s and what are their charges
Proton positive, neutron zero, electron negative
What is an ion
An atom that has lost or gained an electron
What does the atomic number of an element tell you
The number of protons and electrons in and atom
What does the mass number of an element tell you
The mass of an Atom
How do you find out the number of neutrons in one atom of any element
Mass minus number equals neutrons
Which bond is the strongest
Covalent
What bond occurs when electrons are transferred
Ionic
What bond occurs when electrons are shared
Covalent
What is a homogeneous mixture? What are heterogenous mixture’s?
A homogeneous mixture dissolves it is a solution at heterogenous mixture doesn’t dissolve it’s a suspension and colloid
What is a molecule
A.k.a. an ion
What is a compound
Two or more elements combined chemically
What two things make up a solution, and give an example of each part
Solvent: water, solute: sugar
What is a suspension?
When the particles are bigger than the water molecules so it doesn’t dissolve
What is a colloid
A colloid is when the particles are smaller than suspensions butt bigger than a solute
What is the main difference between a colloid and suspensions/solutions
A call Lloyd takes in the water and a solution/suspension tries to take things into the water
Draw the pH scale and show which numbers are acids bases and neutrals
At the top is the number one it is an acid in the middle it is the number seven it is neutral at the bottom it is number 14 and it is base
What ions are in an acidic solution
H plus
What ions are in a base solution
OH minus
What are the four major organic compound groups
Nucleic acid’s, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids
What is the monomer of a carbohydrate
Monosaccharide a.k.a. one unit of sugar
