Biochemistry Key Terms Flashcards
What is a compound that contains carob?
organic e.g. CO2/lipids
What is a compound that DOES NOT contain carbon?
inorganic e.g. phosphate
What is redox?
OIL RIG
oxidation is loss of oxygen or hydrogen atoms
reduction is gain of electrons or hydrogen
What are co-enzymes?
non protein molecules that help enzymes to work by transferring other molecules aroung
e. g. NAD to NADH - reduction
e. g. FADH to FAD - oxidation
What is phosphorylation?
adding a phosphate e.g. ADP + Pi -> ATP
What is photo-phosphorylation?
using light energy to add a phosphate
What is photolysis?
using light energy to split a molecule
e.g. H2O + light -> 2H^+ + 2&e- + 1/2 O2
What is the electron transport chain?
electrons flow through proteins in a membrane
What is a proton?
hydrogen ion
