Biochemistry Flashcards
What is glycogenesis?
synthesis of glycogen from glucose
what is GLYCOGENOLYSIS?
breakdown of glycogen to form glucose
What is Gluconeogenesis?
De novo synthesis of glucose from metabolic precursors
What types of glycogen is there?
Liver and muscle
Liver- breaks down glycogen between meals and released to maintain blood glucose levels
Muscle- not available for maintenance of blood glucose levels
Provides energy via glycolysis and the the citric acid cycle during bursts of physical activity
What is the structure of the glycogen?
Is a polymer which is has its alpha glucose monosaccharides joined via 1,4 and 1,6 glycosidic bonds
Where does a primer join the glycogen?
Glycogenin
What enzyme is used to allow 1-6 glycosidic bond to occur?
transglycosylase
What enzyme is used in the step of converting glucose to glucose 1 phosphate?
Glycogen phosphorylase
What enzyme is used to convert glucose 1 phosphate to glucose 6 phosphate?
phosphoglucomutase
What precursors are used in gluconeogenesis?
Lactate
Amino acids
Glycerol
Gluconeogenesis is essentially the reverse of glycolysis true or false?
false- due to use of unique enzymes to overcome unnecessary steps
