Biochem intro Flashcards
define cell
fundamental unit of life, small membrane bound units of aqueous solution filled with chemicals
what constitutes life
able to reproduce by itself
able to evolve
able to convert energy
divide and grow
respond to stimuli
what similarities do cells have
similar protein components, fats, membranes, metabolic processes, DNA RNA
living things have evolutionary history –> descended from earlier cell
ATP and motor proteins
conformational changes in the motor proteins (change in shape) allow for movement
how does ATP work
2 high energy bonds between phosphate molecules
cleave 1 phosphate group, breaks high energy bond, releases energy to drive cellular reactions
ATP + H20 <==> ADP + H+
polarity
2 atoms of different electronegativity are covalently bonded, unequal distribution of charge in the molecule, region of partial positive charge, region of partial negative charge
chemistry and properties of water
polar, capable of H bonding
high MP BP
good solvent
high heat of vapourisation
good cohesion properties
surface tension
less dense as ice due to lattices formed from hydrogen bonding ( 2 times as long as the OH covalent bond)
ionisation and hydration
ions dissociate in aqueous solution
water molecules surround the ion/polar molecule and form a hydration shell
