Biochem Flashcards
What is the test for Lipids?
Add ethanol then water to the solution.
positive result : a milky white emulsion.
Negative result : no emulsion.
What are the organic compounds of carbohydrates
carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms.
What are the organic compounds of lipids
carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms.
What are the organic compounds of proteins

What do carbohydrates include?
Rice, potato, bread, pasta, corn, banana, cereals, fruit.
What do proteins include
Lentils, fish, beef, eggs, chickpeas, canned tuna, insects, tofu.
What do lipids include
Oil, butter, pork belly, lard seed oil.
What are the types of carbohydrates, Describe their structures
Monosaccharides : are carbohydrates made up of a single sugar unit e.g glucose.
Disaccharides: are carbohydrates made up of two simple sugar units joined together by a special bond e.g sucrose, lactose, Maltose.
Polysaccharides : are made up of many simple sugar units e.g starch, glycogen, cellulose.
What is the structure of proteins
amino acids with peptide bonds to form a long chain of protein
What is the structure of a lipid
3 fatty acids and one glycerol molecule.
Solid liquid at room temp (oil is liquid lipid at room temp).
What is the test for starch
Make a solution using water + pestle then add a few drops of iodine.
Positive result : blue black color
Negative result : iodine remains yellow
