Bio6+ Flashcards
molecules that have an unequal distribution ofcharges
polar molecule
weak interaction involving a hydrogen atom and a fluorine, oxygen, or nitrogen atom
Hydrogen bond
Combination of two or more substance in which each substance retain its individual characteristics and properties
Mixture
Another name for a homogenous mixture. There is a solvent and a solute. The solute will dissolve completely in the solvent
Solution
Substances the release hydrogen ions when dissolved in water
Acid
Substance that release hydroxide ions(OH) when dissolved in water
Base
The measure of concentration of H + in a solution
PH
Mixtures that can react acid or bases to keep the PH within a particular range
Buffer
Large molecules that are formed by joining smaller organic molecules together
Macromolecules
Molecules made from repeating units of identical or nearly identical compounds called monomers that are linked together by a seriers of covaient bonds
polymer
composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen in aratio of one oxygen and two hydrogen atoms for each carbon atom; store energy, and provide structurel support
Carbohydrate
Molecules made mosily of carbon and hydrogen that make up the fats, oils and waxes composed of fatty acids glycerol and other components; stores energy, provides steroids
Lipid
Compound made of small carbon compounds called amino acids; transports substances, speed reactions, provides support and hormones
Protein
Complex macromolecules that store and transmit genetic information; made of smaller repeating submits call nucleotides
; store and communicates genetic info
Nucleic acid
