Bio5+ Flashcards
excessive use of species that have economic value that is increasing the current rate of extinction
Overexploitation
The separation of an ecosystem into small pieces of land
Habitat fragmentation
Different environment conditions that occur along the boundaries of an ecosystem
Edge effect
The increasing concentration of toxic substances in organisms as trophic levels increase in a food chain or food web
Biological magnification
nonnative species that are either intentionally or unintertionally transported to a new habitat
Introduced species
Occurs when fertilizers, animals wastes, sewage, or other substance rich in nitrogen and phosphorus flow into waterways causing extensive algae growth
Eutrophication
Resources that are replaced by natural processes faster than they are consumed
Renewable resource
Resources that are found on earth in limited amouths or those that are replaced by natural processes over extremely long period of time
Nonrenewable resource
Using resources at a rate in which they can be replaced or recycled while preserving the long term environment health of the biosphere
Sustainable use
Species that are only found in that species geographic area
Endemic
Use of living organisms, such as prokaryotes, fungi or plants, to detoxify a polluted area
Bioremediation
Adding natural predators to a degraded ecosystem
Biological augmentation
