BIO4 Flashcards
Hypertonic solution
low concentration outside of cell leading water molecules to leave the cell, the cells then shrivel up
Hypotonic solution
High concentration outside the cell but lower in the cell. Water molecules enter, cell expands
Isotonic solutions
equal concentrations in and out the cell. no water movement.
ATP
energy rich particles that energize the cell. Think of a rechargeable battery that powers the cell’s activity’s
Concentración gradient
difference of a substance between 2 areas. one side is harder to get thru while other is ez
Transport protein
carry thing in to cell. aid things that need to come in but are too large- lead to lower concentration on the gradient.
marker proteins
flags or labels cells use to identify molecules and to communicate with other cells
Passive transport DIFFUSION
- lazy river at amusement parks for molecules.
- doesn’t use ATP
simple diffusion (passive)
membrane is permeable to solute. Things can glide into the cell.
facilitated diffusion
some molecules are bigger and have a harder time getting thru the membrane. Transport proteins help move them into an area where the membrane is more permeable
Ósmosis (passive transport)
transport of water molecules
-move down their concentration gradient as a response to solute concentration
-net flow of water is from the more dilute solution to a more concentrated solution.
Plasmolysis
-when a plant cell is placed in a hypertonic solition
-vacuole loses water and shrinks causing the cell membrane to peel away from the cell wall
-eventually plant goes limp
Turgidty
-when plant cell is placed in a hypotonic solution.
-vacuole gains water and expands causing cell membrane to swell, pushing on the cell wall
Active transport
-Required ATP during transport as solute molecules move up (against) their concentration gradient.
-helps maintain an internal environment that is different form its external environment.
- either by transport proteins or change in cell membrane
Endocytosis
injest food/ take in
- Phagosytosis: cell eats large particles
-Pinosytosid: cell drinks, takes in droplets.
