Bio treatment - depression Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 3 types of bio treatment?
A
SSRI’s, tricyclic antidepressants, monoamine oxidase inhibitors
2
Q
What do monoamine oxidase inhibitors do?
A
production of monoamine oxidase is slowed, meaning more monoamines will be available in the synapse as less will be broken down
3
Q
What do tricyclic antidepressants do?
A
block the reuptake of noradrenaline and serotonin, meaning an increased amount of these in the synapse
4
Q
What do SSRI’s do?
A
block reuptake of serotonin, meaning more will be available within the synapse
5
Q
Strengths of bio treatment:
A
- WHO reported 60% of people being effected by drugs positively
- easier to take a tablet - less time consuming and fewer emotional side affects than going to CBT
6
Q
Weaknesses of bio treatment:
A
- side affects - may be worse than the actual experience of depression
- don’t cure the illness but ease the symptoms - doesn’t address cause like it does in CBT - e.g core beliefs
