bio test 2024 Flashcards
what does semi-permeable mean?
a cell which allows small molecules through, but not larger ones
explain the difference between prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells.
Prokaryotic cells are much smaller then eukaryotic cells.
Prokaryotic cells only contain a single chromosome while eukaryotic cells contain multiple linear chromosomes.
what is a nucleus?
The nucleus houses the cell’s genetic material, DNA, and is also the site of synthesis for ribosomes, the cellular machines that assemble proteins.
what is the difference between a plant and animal cell?
Plant cells have a cell wall as well as a cell membrane, whereas animal cells have only a cell membrane. Plants have an organelle called chloroplast, animal cells do not.
what is osmosis?
Osmosis is movement of solvent particles across a semipermeable membrane from a dilute solution to concentration solution
what is diffusion?
diffusion is the natural movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
what are the seven characteristics of a living organism?
nutrition, respiration, movement, excretion, growth, reproduction, and sensitivity.
why are cells so small?
cells are small so they can maximize their ratio of surface area to volume.
if a parent cell had 46 chromosomes, how many chromosomes would each of the daughter cells have?
46 chromosomes.
explain the difference between binary fission and mitosis.
binary fission occurs in prokaryotic cells. mitosis occurs in eukaryotic cells.
