Bio Quiz 1 Vocab Flashcards
A structure, behaviour, or physiological process that helps an organism survive and reproduce
Adaptation
A structural adaptation where a harmless species resembles a harmful one in coloration or structure
Mimicry
Differences between individuals which may be structural, functional, or physiological
Variation
Change in content or the genetic message; base sequence of nucleotides are altered (removed or added)
Mutation
Genetic advantage of one organism over its competitors, causing favoured survival and reproduction
Selective Advantage
Characteristics of a population change over generations; organisms with heritable traits survive and reproduce, passing traits to offspring
Natural Selection
Environmental conditions that select for characteristics of individuals and select against others
Selective Pressure
The relative contribution that an individual makes to the next generation by producing offspring that will survive and live to reproduce
Biological Fitness
Continued existence of organisms which are best adapted to their environment, with the extinction of others
Survival of the Fittest
Darwin’s theory that natural selection does not demonstrate progress, rather results from a species’ ability to survive the local environment
Descent with Modification
Change in allele frequency (in population) from one generation to the next; descent from a common ancestor
Evolution
Traveled on the HMS Beagle to amp the coast of South America; observations and inferences lead to Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection
Charles Darwin
Variant form of a gene at a specific location on a chromosome; exist in two copies, where one copy of the gene inherited from each parent
Allele
Unit of hereditary; composed of nucleotide bases within the DNA molecule
Gene
