Bio Quiz 1 Concepts Flashcards
1
Q
What were Darwin’s four postulates?
A
- Overproduction - more organisms than needed
- Variation - difference in genetics that is an advantage
- Competition - organisms compete for basic life necessities
- Natural selection - selection of who gets to live and reproduce based on advantageous traits. If able to survive, genetic trait is passed on
2
Q
Darwin’s observations
A
- Generations of populations produce more offspring than the parents
- Populations do not grow
- Resources are limited - competition
- individuals vary in a population
- Variations witnessed are heritable
3
Q
Darwin’s Inferences
A
- Individuals in a population constantly compete
- Individuals will inherit characteristics giving them a better chance of survival
4
Q
Darwin’s Theory
A
- Over time, populations will change
- Change will occur as advantageous traits are more common
- Adaptation will occur as the allele/gene frequency increases
- Adaptation can lead to speciation
5
Q
Directional
A
Favours phenotypes at one extreme
6
Q
Stabilizing
A
Favours the intermediate phenotype
7
Q
Disruptive
A
Favours the only two extremes
8
Q
Sexual
A
Reproductive success based on the ability to attract a mate
9
Q
Types of Adaptations
A
Structural - Outside the body
Behavioral - How organism acts
Physiological - Inside the body
