bio-psychology- Nervous System and Endrocine system Flashcards
Define the nervous system (NS)
- CNS (central nervous system) and PNS (peripheral nervous system)
-Communicates using electrical signals
Define Central nervous system (CNS)
-Brain
-Spinal cord
-Origin of all complex commands and decisions
Define Peripheral nervous system (PNS)
-Sends info to CNS
-Transmits messages from CNS to muscles and glands in body
Define Somatic nervous system (SNS)
-Transmits info from receptor cells in effectors to CNS
-Receives info from CNS which directs muscles to act
Define Autonomic nervous system (ANS)
-Transmits info to and from internal organs
-‘Autonomic’ means involuntarily
What are the 2 divisions off the ANS
-SNS (sympathetic nervous system)
-PNS (parasympathetic nervous system)
Define the Endocrine system
-A network of glands across the body that secrete chemical messages called hormones
-Works alongside nervous system (NS)
Define hormone
Chemical messengers released from endocrine glands
Hormones are secreted where?
Into the bloodstream
What is the master gland called?
Pituitary gland
Name the 7 glands in the endocrine system
-Pituitary gland (master gland)
-Hypothalamus
-Thyroid (thyroxine)
-Adrenal gland (adrenaline)
-Pancreas (insuline)
-Ovaries (oestrogen)
-Testes (testosterone)
Explain fight or flight
-Occurs during a stressful event
-Stressor perceived = hypothalamus triggered = activates pituitary gland = triggers activity in sympathetic branch of ANS (autonomic NS) = ANS changes from parasympathetic- sympathetic state
-Adrenaline is produced, secreted from adrenal gland into bloodstream
