bio module 1 topic 2 Communities, Biomes & Ecosystems Flashcards
tundra
A region that is big, flat, cold, has no trees and the sub soil is permanently frozen.
tropical savanna
biome characterized by tall grasses and occasional trees
temperate grassland
open grassy plains that are few trees.
temperate forest
a forest found between the tropical (hot humid) and boreal (northern, cold) regions. they go through 4 seasons.
boreal forest
Taiga generally referred to in North America as a boreal forest or snow forest, is a biome characterized by coniferous forests consisting mostly of pines.
desert
arid (hot, not humid) land with usually sparse (little) vegetation especially : such land having a very warm climate and receiving less than 10 inches of sporadic (random) rainfall annually
tropical rainforest
a hot, moist biome found near Earth’s equator. Very dense trees and plants
photic zone
the top layer, nearest the surface of the ocean and is also called the sunlight layer. In this zone enough light penetrates the water to allow photosynthesis
abyssal zone
The portion of the ocean deeper than about 6,600 feet and shallower than about 20,000 feet. The zone is defined mainly by its extremely uniform environmental conditions, as reflected in the distinct life forms inhabiting it. It is the pitch-black bottom layer of the ocean. The name (abyss) comes from a Greek word meaning “no bottom” because they thought the ocean was bottomless.
intertidal zone
an ecosystem found on marine shorelines, where a multitude of organisms living on the shore survive changes between high and low tides
