Bio Mod 1 The Nature of Science Flashcards
Organism
Living entity that contains one or more cells
Five Fundamentals Characteristics of Organisms
- Cells
- Replication
- Information
- Energy
- Evolution
Cells
Basic structural and functional unit of all organisms
Genes
Encodes genetic information
Molecules
Substance made up of two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds
Three Theories of Modern Biology
- Cell theory
- Chromosome Theory
- Theory of Evolution
Theory
Explanation for a broad class of observed phenomena that is supported by a wide body of evidence
Cell Theory
All organisms are made of cells and all cells come from preexisting cells
Hypothesis
Testable and falsifiable (can be proven wrong) statement that explains a phenomenon or a set of observations
Two Hypotheses for Cells
- Spontaneous generation (appear)
2. All cells from cells (grow and divide)
Experiment
Test the effect of a factor on a particular phenomenon
Prediction
Measurable or observable result of an experiment based on a particular hypothesis; provides support for the hypothesis
Chemical Evolution
Simple chemical compounds in the early atmosphere and ocean combined via reactions to form larger, more complex substances, eventually leading to life
Null hypothesis
Specifies what the results of an experiment will be if the main hypothesis being tested is wrong (often states that there will be no difference between experimental groups)
Control
A group of samples that don’t receive the experimental treatment
