Bio Genetics 2 (protein synthesis) Flashcards
What are proteins made up of?
Amino acids
Define amino acids
Amino acids are molecules that make up proteins
Genes contain the instructions for the number and order of amino acids to create functioning protein
Where are amino acids located?
in the cytoplasm whilst DNA is found in the nucleus of the cell
Define protein synthesis
the stage where DNA is turned into proteins through amino acids
What are the stages of protein synthesis?
- Transcription
- Translation
Explain transcription
DNA is transcribed to mRNA (messenger RNA) then travels out of cell nucleus to cytoplasm
Explain translation
in the ribosome (factory house) tRNA have the anticodon to mRNA
tRNA and mRNA click together forming amino acid chain
Define codon
three bases
