BIO FINAL Flashcards
Resting metabolic rate? (RMR)
energy expenditure at rest but routine activities/day
basal metabolic rate (BMR)
metabolism at complete rest- lowest possible
standard metabolic rate (SMR)
METABOLIC RATE measured at a specified temperature (ectotherms)
Field metabolic rate (FMR)
Metabolic rate measured in wild animals
direct calorimetry?
heat loss
indirect calorimetry?
O2 consumed or CO2 produced.
isometric scaling
means dimensions increase at the same rate
a birds mass and beak length increasing proportionally means its isometric
hypoallometric scaling
this occurs when one characteristic. (beak length) increases at a slower rate compared to another characteristic. (body mass)
inverse scaling
inverse scaling implies that one variable increases while the other decreases
hyperallometric scaling
one characteristic increases at a faster rate relative to another characteristic
Vasodilation
Vasodilation involves the relaxation of smooth muscle cells within the blood vessel walls, leading to an increase in vessel diameter
in terms of thermoregulation it helps dissipate heat by increasing blood flow to the skin, allowing heat loss in warm environments
some triggers that might allow this to occur in the body is warm temperatures, decreased O2 levels, increased CO2 levels
vasoconstriction
