bio chem quiz 1: plasma proteins Flashcards
What are B lymphocytes?
White blood cells that produce immunglobulins/antibodies . develop in bone marrow
What is the primary difference between plasma and serum?
Plasma contains protein and clotting factors, whereas serum does not contain fibrinogen or clotting factors.
Plasma protein characteristics:
mostly synthesized in the liver, generally synthesized on membrane bound polysomes (RER), have a half life , can be altered, may exhibit polymorphisms, most are glycoproteins
what will lead to a decrease in serum protein levels?
nephrotic syndrome, malabsorption, starvation, blood loss
what will lead to an increase in serum protein levels?
dehydration, multiple myeloma
How do antibodies bind to antigens?
with high affinity (low Kd) and high specificity . combine non covalently with antigens .
Antibody structure/img structure
2 H, 2 light, amino terminal contain variable regions where diversity resides ,
which biochemical feature differentiates the five classes of ImG?
the constant region of the heavy chain dictates cell interactions. 5 classes differ in heavy chains
where is the antigen binding sites?
variable regions near the amino terminus of the heavy and light chains
what are antigenic sites?
areas at the N terminus of H and L chains that form beta sheets
loops are hypervariable and are significant to antigenic sites.
