BIO- CELLS Flashcards
Which cell has membrane-bound organelles?
Eukaryotic cell
What is the largest organelle? What is around it?
.Nucleus.
.Has a nuclear envelope surrounding it
What is the function of the nucleus?
Controls the cells activities by controlling the transcription of DNA
What is the nuclear envelope and its function?
The nuclear envelope is a double membrane bound organelle that has nuclear pores which allow movement of substances eg. mRNA
Where is the nucleoplasm located and what is its texture?
. Inside the nucleus
. Is a gel-like substance
What is Mitochondria?
. Has a double membrane
. produces ATP (energy) during aerobic respiration
Where can mitochondria be found?
In cells that require a lot of energy for processes (eg. muscle cells or the intestine)
Describe the structure of the Mitochondria
- Has an outer membrane,
- inner membrane,
- cristae (folds within the mitochondria which contain enzymes),
- Matrix
What does SER stand for and describe its structure
SER= Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Tubular structure (like a log)
What is SER involved in?
Lipid Synthesis (MAKING of Lipids) and PROCESSING of lipids.
Why is SER smooth?
Because it has no ribosomes on its surface
Describe the meaning of RER and its structure
RER= Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Has ribosomes attached on its surface and looks like a dark blob (through microscope).
What is the RER involved in?
The folding and processing of proteins (that are made by ribosomes)
