Q

part 1

A

A biological catalyst is best known as an enzyme which can be produced by all living cells.
Catalysts can speed up chemical reactions and remain chemically unchanged after a reaction.
During a chemical reaction the substance an enzyme will work on is known as the substrate and when both bind together they form what is known as a product.
The substrate binds to the enzyme’s active site which is complementary to the substrate in shape.

Q

part 2

A

Certain conditions can speed up or slow down enzyme activity. Temperature speeds up enzyme activity.
As the temperature increases towards its optimum temperature, the kinetic energy of the enzyme and substrate increases causing the enzyme and substrates to have more collisions.
When it’s at its optimum temperature the enzyme activity will be at its highest.
As the temperature continues to increase beyond the optimum, the enzyme’s active site will become denatured.
This means the active site of the enzyme will lose its specific shape and will no longer be able to form a product with its specific substrate.
This decreases enzyme activity
