Bio Flashcards
what is the equation for Aerobic respiration
C6H12O6 + 6O2 —> 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy
What do you use to test for starch
Iodine
What do you use to test for sugar
Benedict’s solution
What do you use to test for Lipids/Fats
Ethanol
What do you use to test for protein
biuret test
what is the equation for Anaerobic respiration
C6H12O6 —> C3H6O3 (+energy)
what is the equation for Fermentation/Yeast
C6H12O6 —> 2C2H5OH + 2CO2
what is the word equation for aerobic respiration
Oxygen + Glucose —> Carbon Dioxide + Water
what is the word equation for anaerobic respiration
Glucose —> Lactic acid + energy
what is the word equation for fermentation/yeast
Glucose —> Ethanol + Carbon Dioxide
where does blood from the vena cava flow into the heart
right atrium
what is mitosis needed for in multi cellular organisms
Cell division by mitosis is important in thegrowthanddevelopmentof multicellular organisms
how do bacteria cells reproduce
Bacteria multiply by a type of simple cell division known asbinary fission
How often do bacteria cells multiply in ideal conditions
In the right conditions, some species of bacteria (such ascoli) can multiply as much as once every20 minutes
What is a stem cell
A stem cell is anundifferentiatedcell
what are some uses of stem cells
Repair organs/tissues and cure diseases
Why are stem cells useful
They are useful because they can clones cells
What is a gene
A gene is a section of DNA which controls part of a cell’s chemistry - particularly protein production
What is a chromosome
A chromosome is a molecule made up of many coiled up sections of DNA
What is DNA
deoxyribonucleic acid, is the molecule that contains the instructions for growth and development of all organisms
What shape is DNA
DNA is a polymer made up of two strands forming a double helix
Ways the Xylem is adapted for it’s role
It is made up of dead cells that are hollow
Ways the Phloem are adapted for it’s role
Very few cub cellular structures
What is Therapeutic cloning
Therapeutic cloning is a process that produces an embryo with genes that are identical to the patient’s - which means that the patient’s body will not reject the cells
How do I test for Starch
place some drops of iodine onto the sample. If it turns orange-brown to blue-black there is starch
How do I test for sugar
Prepare the food sample > drop a few drops of benedict’s solution onto the sample > keep the sample heated in a water bath > if the solution turns form blue to brick red there is sugar
How do I test for Protein
Biuret test > drop drops of biuret solution which is blue > if it turns purple there is protein present
What are uses of monoclonal antibodies
They can be used for pregnancy tests as when dyed they can bind to the hormones of pregnancy presenting a result / they can be used for cancer diagnosis as they bind onto the antigens of the cancer cell locating it
