Bio 15.2 Energy flow Flashcards
What happens to the animals’ size and number in a food chain?
As you go up a food chain, the animals get later and fewer.
Why is it less efficient to be a higher-order consumer in a food chain?
This is because around 50% to 90% o energy is lost when an animal is eaten.
What do food chains show, and not show?
They show what animals eat but not how many organisms of that species in that trophic level.
In a food pyramid, each trophic level is represented by what?
A horizontal bar.
What does the width of the bar represent?
- The number of organisms (or)
- The amount of biomass (or)
- The amount of energy
What is a pyramid of number?
A pyramid of number shows the total number of organisms at each trophic level in the food chain of an ecosystem.
Why might a pyramid of number not form the shape of a traditional pyramid?
It does not look like a pyramid when the producer is a larger organism than the primary consumers.
What is a pyramid of biomass?
A pyramid of biomass represents the amount of biomass at each trophic level.
Why are pyramids of biomass always pyramided in shape?
They are always pyramided in shape because they sho the amount of biomass, and not the number of organisms at each level.
TRUE or FALSE
Pyramids of biomass in the aquatic environment are steeper than those on land.
TRUE
