Bio 15.1 Food webs Flashcards
What do food webs & chains describe?
Feeding relationships (the transfer of energy from one organism to the next).
What do arrows in a food chain/web represent?
The transfer of energy.
What is a trophic level?
The position of an organism in the food chain.
A food chain starts with what?
A producer; an organism that makes its own food. These are usually green plants that photosynthesize.
What are prey and predator?
- Prey is the animal that gets eaten by the predator
- Predator is the animal that hunts and eats its prey
What are all the types of organisms in a common food chain?
Producer → Primary consumer → Secondary consumer → Tertiary consumer
In a food web, what does each image represent?
The entire population of that organism in that habitat.
What is biomass?
The mass of living material in an organism. It is calculated as a dry mass because living things are made up of different amounts of water.
What trophic level are secondary consumers at?
The 3rd trophic level.
Normally, what makes up the first trophic level in an ocean food web?
Microscopic phytoplankton.
TRUE or FALSE
The food webs on land generally have more trophic levels than the food webs in the ocean.
FALSE
