BIO Flashcards
What does the nervous system consists of
CNS - spinal cord and brain
PNS - automatic, somatic
sympathetic and parasympathetic
What is the brains role?
provides conscious awareness and is involved in all psychological processes.
What does the brain consist of ?
Occipital lobe - visual info
Temporal lobe - auditory info
Parietal lobe - spatial navigation
Frontol lobe - higher order functions like planning
Whats the role of the brain stem ?
Connects the brain and spinal cord and controls involuntary movement like breathing
Whats the role of the spinal cord ?
transfers messages to and from the brain and the rest of the body
What else is the spinal cord responsible for ?
simple reflex actions like moving your hand away from a hot pot quickly
What is the role of the SomaticNS ?
Is to carry sensory information from the outside world by our senses to the brain and provide muscle responses via these motor pathways so it allows us to respond to the environment
What does the SomaticNS consist of ?
Sensory receptors - which carry information to the spinal cord and brain
Motor pathways - which allow the brain to control movement
What is the role of the ANS ?
Homeostasis , maintains internal processes
What does the AtomaticNS consist of ?
Parasympathetic NS
sympathetic NS
What is the SympatheticNS role
to be involved in responses that prepare the body for flight or fight , increase heart . less important functions slow down like digestion. Helps us prepare for the danger ahead
What is the ParaNS
Opposite is returns the body to its normal resting state. Digestion is started again
