Freedom of expression, religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition.
1st amendment
Trick: “Freedom comes first”
Protects the rights of individual citizens to keep and bear arms.
2nd amendment
Trick: “To bare arms”
Prohibits soldiers from temporarily residing in private homes without the owner’s permission.
3rd amendment
Trick: “No soldiers allowed - 3 words”
Protects people’s right to privacy, prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures by the government.
4th amendment
Trick: “Search = Warrant”
No person without the grand jury indictment or punished twice for the same offense.
5th amendment
Trick: “No random arresting”
Rights of accused in criminal cases, including legal representation and a fair speedy trial.
6th amendment
Trick: “Rights of accused in criminal cases”
Guarantees a trial by jury.
7th amendment
Trick: “Trial by - 7 letters”
Insures that punishments for crimes are not excessive, cruel, or unusual.
8th amendment
Trick: “No unusual punishments”
People retain rights not listed in the United States Constitution.
9th amendment
Trick: “People’s rights”
Power not given to the federal government is given to the people or states.
10th amendment
Trick: “State’s rights”
Individual cannot sue state federal courts.
11th amendment
Trick: “(I)ndividua(l) = 11”
Electoral College must cast separate ballots for president and vice president.
12th amendment
Trick: “Article (2), Section (1) = 12 flipped”
Abolished slavery and involuntary servitude.
13th amendment
Trick: “Lucky 13 - abolished slavery”
All persons born or naturalized in the United States enjoy full rights.
14th amendment
Trick: “Born or naturalized in America = full rights”
States cannot prevent a person from voting because of race, creed, color.
15th amendment
Trick: “Everyone’s allowed to vote”
