{Amendments 1-10}
1st Amendment
{FREEDOM}
- freedom of religion, speech & press
- right to assemble and protest peacefully
- right to petition government for redress of grievances
2nd Amendment
{BEAR ARMS}
- right to bear arms
3rd Amendment
{QUARTERING TROOPS}
- no soldier can be quartered in any house without consent of the owner
4th Amendment
{SEARCH & SEIZURE}
- police cannot search without consent or probable cause
5th Amendment
{CRIME}
- “plead the 5th” (no person has to be their own witness)
- double jeopardy (a person cannot be tried for the same crime twice)
- due process (notice of charges against someone)
- eminent domain (the government has the power to take part of your land for public use)
6th Amendment
{CRIMINAL RIGHTS}
- speedy & public trial
- informed of crime
- confronted with witnesses against him
- have assistance & legal counsel
7th Amendment
{TRIAL BY JURY}
- in court cases that exceed a value of $20, a right to jury shall be preserved
8th Amendment
{PUNISHMENT & BAILS/FINES}
- prohibits excessive bails & fines
- prohibits cruel & unusual punishment
9th Amendment
{IMPLICIT RIGHTS}
- protects implicit rights not stated in constitution (ex: right to privacy, right to travel, etc.)
10th Amendment
{STATE RIGHTS}
- powers not delegated to federal government are reserved to state government or to the people
