What is biliary colic?
A
Obstruction of the common bile duct, causing colicky pain. Associated with cholecystitis

How would biliary colic present?
A
Colicky pain in right hypochondrium, radiating to shoulder
Nausea and vomiting
Signs of obstructive jaundice

What investigations would you carry out for biliary colic?
A
Bloods - ↑CRP ↑WCC indicative of cholecystits
LFTs – obstructive - may be mixed in acute cholescycstits – backflow causes damage to hepatocytes
USS abdo – dilatation of bile duct
ERCP if USS shows stone and dilated duct
MRCP if USS shows dilated duct with no stone

Q
How would you treat biliary colic?
A
- Analgesia
- ERCP – remove stone
- Insert stent/surgery – for larger stones
- Cholecystectomy
