Big Test 3 Flashcards
Geomorphic processes
Ways in which the land can be shaped.
Erosion
The process of wearing down rocks in a river.
Hydraulic action
Air and water is forced into cracks in the river bed and banks which cause them to break apart and wear away.
Abrasion
Rocks being carried along the river wear down the bed and banks like sandpaper
Attrition
Rocks in the river are smashed together and break into smaller, rounder and smoother particles.
Solution
Dissolvable particles are dissolved into a river
Transportation
The movement of rocks along the river floor.
Traction
Boulders and rocks are rolled along the river bed
Saltation
Small pebbles and stones are bounced along the river bed
Suspension
Fine, light material is carried along the river
Solution
Minerals are dissolved in the water and carried along in the river
Deposition
When the river loses energy, it drops the material it has been carrying.
Physical causes of flooding
Cyclones from the Bay of Bengal
Snow melt - increases the amount of water going into the rivers
Human causes of flooding
Deforestation - reduces the amount of water taken up from tree roots
Increasing urban areas - creates more impermeable surfaces
