Big picture of neuroepidemiology Flashcards
Difference between genetics and genomics
genetics- study of selected genes to understand inheritance
Genomics-Study of the whole genome to understand how variations affect health and disease
What clinical manifestations does epilepsy have
Hypersynchronous neuronal discharge
Clinical presentations of Parkinsons
Tremor
Bradykinesia (slowness of initiation of voluntary movement with progressive reduction in speed and amplitude of repetitive actions)
Rigidity and Gait disorders
Postural instability not caused by primary visual, vestibular, cerebellar or proprioceptive dysfunction
What is Myasthenia graves
Autoimmune disorder of the neuromuscular junction
What is a Myasthenic crisis
Medical emergency characterised by neuromuscular respiratory failure
Spontaneous or precipitated by infection, surgery or medication
Symptoms of myasthenia graves
Weakness of eye muscles Ptosis - (drooping of eye muscles) Diplopia (blurred or double vision) Change in facial expression SOB Dysarthria (impaired speech)
What is Guillain Barre syndrome
Acute immune-mediated polyneuropathy
- Progressive muscle weakness
- Reduced or absent tendon reflexes
- From mind weakness to complete paralysis of limb, facial, respiratory and bulbar muscles
- Autonomic nervous system dysfunction
How is Guillain Barre syndrome seen in labs
Elevated spinal fluid protein with normal cell count
How is Guillain Barre syndrome treated
IVIG
Plasma exchange
What is DALY
1 DALY is not year lost due to ill-health disability or early death
