802.11 standard
Is now called wifi. Wifi was released in 1997.
The committee was called 802.11.
Radio Frequencies
Electromagnetic waves.
Very low to ultra high frequencies.
Radio wave
Invisible field made up of both a magnetic and electric field.
They both support and regenerate one another. Mutually supportive.
Polarisation
Polarisation of a radio wave means how it is orientated to the surface of the earth.
Vertical and horizontal.
Transmit and receive antennas should be polarised in the same way for effective communication.
Amplitude
Strength of a radio wave.
Watts or decibels.
Frequency
Number of times per second that the signal repeats itself.
Hertz.
Phase
How far the signal is offset from a reference point.
Time or signal.
MAC Address
media access control
numerical label assigned to each piece of network interface controllers (NICs)
12 characters (48bits)
hexadecimal format
6 bytes
First 6 digits: organisationally unique identifier (OUI)
Last 6 digits: serial number of the device
