Bias And Statistical Significance Flashcards
Sampling methods, bias in statistics, statistical significance
What is a sampling method?
PROCEDURE used to SELECT A SAMPLE from a POPULATION
What is simple random sampling?
Any sampling method where any object in a population has an equal chance of being selected.
What does without replacement mean?
Items are not replaced in the population after being selected.
What does With Replacement mean?
An element within a population can be selected more than once.
What is bias in statistics?
Bias is the tendency of a statistic to overestimate or underestimate a parameter.
What is sampling bias?
A statistic calculated from the sample is not representative of the population.
What is measurement bias?
When the value of a recorded measurement differs from the true value.
What is statistical significance?
When something is meaningfully different from what we would expect to occur randomly or by chance.
What is the p-value?
Expresses the likelihood that a result could have occurred by chance.
What two things does statistical significance depend on?
The size of the SAMPLE and the size of the EFFECT
