Mrs Welsh costume

A

Long Victorian skirt
Blouse and jacket in pale green and purple to show her determination for women’s rights – pale colours show that she will not use the political suffragette movement to win the vote for the women’s right to graduate.
Her blouse will have a highLacey colour with a gold brooch at the neck to show her high status and importance and she will wear a large brimmed Victorian hat with a white feather to show status and the white feather showing a clarity of her goal for the women to be treated equally as the men and to be able to graduate

Miss Blake costume

A

A Victorian woollen long skirt of I’m dark green and dark purple jacket with a white blouse.
The colours of the suffragettes are dark to show how attached miss Blake is to this political movement but also the darkness shows the death of sadness she feels in losing her job at Girton
Her hair would be tied back in a low bun with a black ribbon and her shoes would be a dull black colour to show[ that she’s being forced to be an outcast from Groton for going against Mrs. Welsh’s wishes.

A

A loose fitting suit to show he makes room for the women’s ideas.
Blue velvet waistcoat show how deeply he cares for the blue stockings.
Round collared to shirt show his acceptance of the women at Cambridge
Black dull polished shoes to show that he’s not accepted at Trinity college when he loses his job for speaking up for the women

Lloyd costume

A

Black pinstriped tight fitting woollen suit to show how he will not move from his fixed viewpoint on women with the pinstripes enforcing his rigid views.
The colour black also showing his strict you obsessed with that opinions and high status. He would wear a red velvet waist coat to show that his wealth and how he is prepared to show violence against women when they attempt to win the right to graduate.

Highly polished pointed black shoes and his shirt would have a point of colour – to show his violence against women
Cufflinks or a pocket watch to show. His wealth she likes chocolate covered strawberries and wine. She likes you all the time I have so long.

Holmes

A

A Victorian wooden suit – has the style of the suit less type fitting than Lloyds, but not as used as Mr Banks to show that he is moving towards a viewpoint that is more supportive of women.
The suit is dark grey rather than Lloyd’s black again to show a softening of attitude.
Holmes would wear a pale blue silk handkerchief in his pocket and pale blue satin to represent that he is a Cambridge student but also to show that his view off bluestockings softens as the play progresses.
He loosened the collar of his white cotton shirt to show he’s more relaxed about the Girton students
Holmes is not as wealthy as a lawyer, but he buys a delicate pair of gloves that have come from Paris

Wills costume

A

Victorian suit of trousers, waistcoat and a jacket with a white shirt and grey velvet waistcoat.
The grey coat shows that he knows he’s in the shade of Tess’s love for Ralph and that he would have to wait for her to see if she will marry him one day in the future.
The velvet fabric shows the depth of his feelings and how he wants to protect her from ruining her reputation

Ralph’s costume

A

A Victorian suit of trousers, waistcoat, and jacket.
The waistcoat would be a dark gold satin to show the falseness of his love for tess. It is all show but not real.
The fabric of the satin makes his declarations of love to Tess slippery.
Ralph’s hair slicked back to give the impression he’s a romantic but is another example of his deceitfulness

A

Edwards costume would be similar to Holmes but he would have a pink satin handkerchief and a pink satin waist coat to show his love for maudie and that he is more relaxed about the women being at Cambridge because he doesn’t fully think or engage with what women are going through

A

She knit a lot and wears glasses. She’s an older Victorian woman and her costume must reflect this.
She should wear a black Victorian dress with white collar hair would be in ringlets The skirt of the dress would be full with a petty coat underneath underneath it.

the theatre is circular with an open roof; as a circular auditorium, it means that everyone watching the play has a clear view of the stage and due to the open roof, the natural light from the sky casts the same light over all the audience and actors

globe theatre context - wealth vs poverty
the setting for the audience was based on class and wealth - the wealthy during the shakespearean times would sit, and the poor would stand in the 'yard' in front of the stage, known as 'groundlings'.
