Describe Ritter’s experiment.

Set out to try and find invisible Rays
Used silver chloride, a chemical that breaks down to give a black colour when exposed to light
Silver chloride turned black more quickly in violet light than red light.
Ritter showed that silver chloride turned black fastest when exposed to invisible Rays just beyond violet light
Later called ultraviolet.

And they travel at the speed of light

Describe Herschel’s experiment.

Answer 3

Used a prism to split sunlight into a spectrum, then put a thermometer in one of the colours.
Then places to other thermometers either side of the spectrum.
As colour changed from violet to red, temperature rose.
Then measure the temperature where there was no visible light.
This gave the highest temperature.
