Beta Adrenergic Drugs Flashcards
1
Q
Where are Beta 1 receptors predominantly found ?
A
- Cardiac muscle
- Kidney (Juxtaglomerular cells)
2
Q
What is Beta 1 agonist drug?
A
- Dobutamine
3
Q
What are the main effects of Beta 1 agonist ?
A
- Increase chronotropy, inotropy & oxygen demand on the heart
- Increase renin release from kidney
4
Q
What are Beta 1- selective blockers ?
A
- Mnemonic: A BEAM
- Atenolol
- Bisoprolol
- Esmolol
- Acebutolol
- Metoprolol
5
Q
What are Beta 1/2- non selective blockers ?
A
- Everything else … e.g : Propranolol, Pindolol, Timolol, Nebivolol etc..
6
Q
How to differentiate between Beta 1 selective blockers and non-selective blockers?
A
- Alpha 1 selective blockers, always start with a letter before M in alphabet and ends in -olol
- Alpha 1/2 non selective blockers, ends in -olol only
7
Q
How do you know it’s Beta-blockers with mixed Alpha blocking effects (mixed)?
A
- Beta blockers ends in -olol
- If it’s not ending in -olol it’s mixed
( e.g : labetalol, carvedilol )
8
Q
What are the 4 beta-blockers that decrease mortality in a heart failure?
A
- Metoprolol
- Bisoprolol
- Carvedilol
- Nebivolol
9
Q
What is ACE inhibitors?
A
- Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, are medications that help relax the veins and arteries to lower BP. It slow down how much angiotensin II (AT2) your body makes.
10
Q
What is Angiotensin II ?
A
- A substance that narrows blood vessels. ( it causes high blood pressure, and forces the heart to work harder )
11
Q
What is ARB ?
A
- Angiotensin receptors blockers
12
Q
68M + shortness of breath on exertion + peripheral edema + JVD + echo shows EF of 35%.
1)- What drug should be initiated to improve EF ?
A
1)- ACE inhibitors or ARB
13
Q
Metropolol is used for what?
A
- Decrease mortality of HF (heart failure)
- To control rate in atrial fibrillation
