What did Nikita Khrushchev request in 1958
A
In 1958 Khrushchev had called for an end to four power control in Berlin. He agreed to meet with President Eisenhower in Paris in May 1960 for further talks
However, the shooting down of an American U2 spy plane only increased tensions and failed to find a solution to the issue of Berlin.

What were reasons for Khrushchevs decision to Build the Berlin Wall

Espionage- Berlin was the ideal place for spies to gather information on the soviets (U2 spy plane)
The ‘Brain Drain’- Young highly qualified men and skilled workers the East could not afford to lose leaving to go to the West. (Undermines communist control in East Germany)
