- Management of seizures and status epilepticus
- Alcohol withdrawal
- Sedation for interventional procedures
- Short term treatment of severe anxiety

Mechanism
A
Enhance binding of GABA to GABAa receptor, enhancing its inhibitory effect. Causes a widespread depressant effect on synaptic transmission

Important adverse effects
A
Drowsiness, sedation and coma
Dependence
Abrupt cessation can cause withdrawal

In which groups of patient should benzodiazepines be used carefully ?
A
Elderly- more susceptible to effects
Avoid in significant respiratory impairment, liver impairment, neuromuscular disease
